Oil skimming systems – technical overview
Oil skimming systems are used in industrial liquid handling processes to remove floating oil, grease and similar contaminants from the surface of water-based fluids. They are commonly applied where oil contamination affects coolant life, washing performance, wastewater treatment efficiency or downstream equipment protection.
This collection includes oil skimmers for continuous surface oil removal in tanks, pits, sumps, ponds and process vessels. Depending on the application, the correct solution may be a tube oil skimmer, a floating weir skimmer or a more complete oil recovery package with transfer, decanting or enclosed vapour control.
Operating principle
Oil skimming systems remove the upper oil layer from the liquid surface before the oil mixes further into the process fluid or enters downstream treatment stages. Tube skimmers operate by carrying oil on a free-floating collector tube, while floating weir skimmers withdraw the upper liquid layer at the oil-water interface. Integrated systems may also include decanting, pumping and transfer components to separate and move the recovered oil to a remote collection point.
