Product description

Polypropylene wound depth filter cartridge for economical, high capacity filtration

The polypropylene wound depth filter cartridge is designed for reliable particulate removal in water and liquid process systems where high dirt holding capacity and economical operation are required. Constructed from continuous polypropylene fibre wound around a rigid support core, this cartridge delivers depth filtration performance with low pressure drop and broad compatibility.

This wound cartridge is ideal for general industrial, municipal, cooling and pre-filtration duties where suspended solids and sediment must be efficiently controlled.

Filtration principle

The cartridge utilises a gradient wound structure where polypropylene yarn is precisely wound around an internal core. The outer layers are wound with a looser structure to capture larger particles, while inner layers are wound tighter to retain finer solids.

This depth filtration principle provides:

  • progressive particle capture from coarse to fine

  • high dirt holding capacity for extended service life

  • low differential pressure during operation

  • predictable and stable filtration performance

Contaminants are retained throughout the full depth of the media rather than just at the surface.

Media technology and uniqueness

The wound media is manufactured from high quality continuous polypropylene fibre selected for its chemical compatibility, mechanical strength and resistance to degradation in a wide range of liquid environments.

Key media characteristics include:

  • polypropylene wound depth structure

  • graded pore density for efficient depth filtration

  • broad compatibility with process liquids

  • stable performance under variable flow conditions

This construction delivers high filtration capacity with economical lifecycle costs.

Design and construction

The cartridge features multiple layers of wound polypropylene yarn supported on a rigid inner core. The wound design maximises usable filtration surface area while providing mechanical support for demanding flow conditions.

Typical design features include:

  • wound polypropylene depth media

  • gradient density wound structure

  • rigid support core for dimensional stability

  • robust construction for general industrial use

The cartridge is designed for installation in standard filter housings.

Materials of construction

Standard construction materials include:

  • Filter media: Polypropylene yarn

  • Inner core: Polypropylene

  • End caps: Polypropylene or elastomer-free construction

Sealing materials are selected according to application requirements.

Available micron ratings

Typical micron ratings include:

  • 1 µm

  • 5 µm

  • 10 µm

  • 20 µm

  • 30 µm

  • 50 µm

  • 75 µm

This range allows accurate selection for coarse and fine depth filtration duties.

Operating conditions

Typical operating conditions include:

  • Maximum operating temperature: up to 80 °C

  • Differential pressure tolerance: suitable for continuous service within specified limits

  • Low pressure drop performance for high flow applications

Exact limits depend on cartridge length, housing design and process conditions.

Key benefits

  • Economical depth filtration solution

  • High dirt holding capacity

  • Broad chemical compatibility

  • Low differential pressure

  • Reliable performance in general applications

  • Suitable for high solids loading

Typical applications

Polypropylene wound depth filter cartridges are commonly used in:

  • industrial process water filtration

  • municipal water treatment

  • cooling tower water filtration

  • pre-filtration for membranes and carbon cartridges

  • chemical processing

  • general manufacturing environments

Configuration and quotation

Wound polypropylene depth filter cartridges are supplied on a configuration basis. Selection parameters include:

  • micron rating

  • cartridge length

  • end cap / seal material

This ensures the cartridge is correctly tailored to the filtration task.

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
