Product description

A PVDF membrane capsule filter is a disposable filtration unit designed for precision filtration of aqueous solutions and biological fluids. The capsule integrates membrane media and housing in a sealed configuration, allowing simple installation without the need for a separate filter housing.

Technical overview

PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membranes are hydrophilic and exhibit low protein adsorption, making them suitable for applications involving biological solutions and sensitive process fluids. These membrane filters are commonly used for final filtration of aqueous solutions where retention of bacteria, colloids and fine particles is required.

The capsule format provides a compact, single-use filtration device that simplifies handling and reduces the risk of contamination during laboratory and small-scale processing.

Operating principle

During operation, the process liquid enters the capsule housing through the inlet connection and flows through the PVDF membrane. The membrane contains controlled pores that retain particles, bacteria and colloidal impurities according to the selected micron rating.

Filtered liquid exits through the outlet connection while contaminants remain captured within the membrane structure.

Material options

Typical construction materials include:

  • Filter media: PVDF membrane
  • Support layers: Polypropylene
  • Capsule housing: Polypropylene
  • Optional filling bell: Polycarbonate

These materials provide compatibility with aqueous solutions and a wide range of laboratory and industrial fluids.

Available micron ratings

Typical pore size options include:

  • 0.1 µm
  • 0.2 µm
  • 0.45 µm
  • 0.65 µm
  • 1.0 µm
  • 3.0 µm

The selected micron rating determines the level of particle and microbial retention required for the filtration process.

Design and construction

Capsule filters combine membrane filtration media and housing into a single disposable filtration unit.

Typical design characteristics include:

  • Hydrophilic PVDF membrane
  • Low protein adsorption characteristics
  • Multiple inlet and outlet connection options
  • Available capsule lengths: 1.5", 2.5", 5" and 10"
  • Typical filtration area around 300 cm²
  • Maximum operating pressure approximately 5 bar at 20°C
  • Maximum operating temperature approximately 80°C

Capsule length influences filtration area and flow capacity.

Typical applications

  • Biotechnology filtration
  • Cell culture media filtration
  • Pharmaceutical research filtration
  • Laboratory aqueous solution filtration
  • Protein and enzyme solution filtration
  • Fine chemical filtration

Key benefits

  • Hydrophilic PVDF membrane for aqueous filtration
  • Low protein adsorption
  • Disposable capsule design simplifies installation
  • Multiple micron ratings for different retention levels
  • Compact design suitable for laboratory and pilot systems
  • Broad chemical compatibility

Configuration and quotation

To specify a PVDF capsule filter, the following parameters should be defined:

  • Required pore size (micron rating)
  • Capsule length (1.5", 2.5", 5" or 10")
  • Connection type
  • Process liquid description
  • Operating pressure and temperature

Providing this information allows the capsule filter configuration to be matched to the filtration system.

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
