ORTS® OIL REMOVAL & TRANSFER SYSTEM

Skim, decant, store and transfer oil on one integrated skid

ORTS® is a complete industrial oil-recovery system designed for applications where simply removing oil from the water surface is not enough.

The system combines a Brill® tube-type oil skimmer with an oil collection tank, decanting capability, transfer pumping and controls so recovered oil can be removed continuously, stored locally and transferred to a remote vessel or disposal point.

The result is an integrated system that can arrive pre-assembled and pre-wired, reducing the amount of separate equipment that must be engineered and installed on site.

System function Skim · Decant · Store · Transfer
Published oil-removal range 4–200 US gal/h (15–757 L/h)
Platform Brill® tube-type oil skimming
Operation Continuous / unattended capable
Installation Integrated skid-mounted system
Configuration Standard, Extended Reach or Mobile
OPERATING PRINCIPLE

One system handles the complete recovered-oil path

ORTS integrates the individual stages required to take free-floating oil from the water surface and move the recovered oil into remote storage.

1

Skim

A free-floating collector tube continuously picks up oil from the surface while following changes in liquid level.

2

Decant

Recovered liquid enters the collection system where residual water can separate and be returned to the area being skimmed.

3

Store

Recovered oil is held in the integrated tank until the transfer conditions or tank level call for removal.

4

Transfer

A selected transfer pump moves the recovered oil to a remote tank, drum, tote or other collection point.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

What is included in an ORTS system?

The final configuration is application-specific, but the ORTS concept combines the major components required for automated surface-oil recovery into one engineered package.

1
Brill® oil skimmer & mount Free-floating collector-tube skimming provides continuous recovery of suitable floating oils, fats, greases and oily waste.
2
Collector tube & tube guards The flexible closed-loop tube follows changing water levels and can navigate around floating debris.
3
Oil storage tank Tank material and capacity can be selected around the oil, operating environment and required storage volume.
4
Decanting stage Separates residual collected water from the recovered oil and can return that water to the pit, sump, pond or tank.
5
Oil transfer pump Pump type and size are selected according to oil viscosity, transfer distance and site requirements.
6
System controller Controls skimmer operation and can integrate pumps, timers, heating, tank-level switches, indicator lights and other equipment.
ORTS CONFIGURATIONS

Standard, Extended Reach or Mobile

The ORTS platform can be configured around the physical relationship between the skimmer, pit or pond and the required oil-storage location.

EXTENDED REACH ORTS

Reach over rails, pits and ponds

Cantilever or balanced-boom arrangements extend the skimmer away from the ORTS tank when the water surface cannot be reached directly from the installation point.

  • 6 or 8 ft (1.83 or 2.44 m) cantilever options
  • 12, 18 or 24 ft (3.66, 5.49 or 7.32 m) balanced-boom options
MOBILE ORTS

Move the complete recovery system

Selected ORTS systems can be configured for movement by forklift or pallet jack, or installed on a trailer for use at multiple oil-recovery locations.

ENGINEERED OPTIONS

Configure the system around the oil and environment

ORTS is not limited to one tank material, pump design or climate configuration.

Tank materials Carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium or plastic according to application requirements.
Centrifugal pump Available where operating conditions suit centrifugal transfer.
Double-diaphragm pump One of the available transfer-pump technologies for application-specific selection.
Gear pump Can be selected for suitable recovered-oil transfer duties.
Progressive-cavity pump Available where the oil characteristics and transfer duty call for this pump principle.
Winterisation Skimmer heat, tank heat tracing, insulation and electric or steam heating can be engineered for cold environments.
Level control Tank-level switches can be integrated to control the transfer process.
Control additions Timers, heating controls, indicator lights and other functions can be integrated into the control system.
Custom configuration Tank capacity, mounting arrangement, pump and controls can be configured around the actual installation.
Electrical and hazardous-area applications: Supply voltages or ATEX compliance. Motor, heater, controller, and generator specifications should be confirmed for the actual geographical site and hazardous-area classification.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Where ORTS oil-recovery systems are used

ORTS is intended for industrial applications where free-floating waste oil must be removed continuously and the recovered oil also needs to be collected and transferred.

Steel Manufacturing Oil recovery from scale pits, process-water basins and sumps.
Industrial Wastewater Continuous free-oil removal ahead of downstream treatment.
Rail & Maintenance Yards Recovered petroleum oil from pits, wash water and collection areas.
Fuel Distribution Free-floating oil recovery from suitable containment and wastewater areas.
Power Generation Industrial oil recovery from plant water and containment systems.
Heavy Equipment Wash Continuous oil removal from oily wash-water collection systems.
Industrial Pits & Sumps Integrated recovery where local oil storage and transfer are required.
Ponds & Basins Extended-reach configurations for larger open water surfaces.
Custom Industrial Processes Engineered systems where standard skimmer-only installations are insufficient.
APPLICATION FIT

When does ORTS make more sense than a standalone oil skimmer?

Strong ORTS applications

  • Continuous free-floating oil accumulation
  • Recovered oil must be stored locally
  • Oil must be transferred automatically to another vessel
  • Residual recovered water should be decanted
  • A pre-engineered skid reduces site installation work
  • Automated tank-level and pump control is useful
  • Heating or winterisation may be required
  • The skimmer requires extended reach or mobility

Review another solution when

  • Only a standalone skimmer and simple collection container are needed
  • The oil is stably emulsified and does not form a recoverable surface layer
  • The complete oily-water stream needs an oil-water separator
  • A sealed enclosure for weather or vapour containment is the main requirement
  • One portable skimmer must serve many locations without integrated storage
ORTS vs oil-water separator: ORTS is fundamentally an active surface-oil recovery, storage and transfer system. Where the complete oily-water stream requires dedicated separation, an SAS®, CoolSkim® or Skim 1st® oil-water separator may be the more appropriate starting point.

Size the ORTS around the complete oil-recovery duty

Correct ORTS selection requires more than choosing an oil-skimmer capacity. Storage volume, transfer distance, oil viscosity, mounting geometry and automation all influence the final system.

Useful application information includes:

  • Oil type and approximate viscosity
  • Liquid temperature
  • Pit, sump, pond or tank dimensions
  • Minimum and maximum liquid levels
  • Distance from the mounting position to the liquid surface
  • Approximate oil quantity per hour, day or batch
  • Required recovered-oil storage volume
  • Transfer distance and elevation
  • Remote storage or disposal vessel
  • Floating debris or solids
  • Need for heating or winterisation
  • Available site electrical supply
  • Hazardous-area classification where applicable

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ORTS® Oil Removal & Transfer System

Common questions about integrated industrial oil skimming, decanting, storage and transfer.

What is an ORTS oil removal system?
ORTS® is an integrated skid-mounted oil-recovery system that combines a Brill® tube-type oil skimmer, recovered-oil storage, decanting, an oil transfer pump and system controls.
What does ORTS stand for?
ORTS stands for Oil Removal & Transfer System. The system is designed not only to skim floating oil but also to manage the recovered oil after it leaves the skimmer.
What is the oil-removal capacity of an ORTS?
Oil Skimmers publishes an overall ORTS oil-removal range of 4–200 US gal/h (15–757 L/h). Final capacity depends on the selected skimmer and system configuration as well as the oil and operating conditions.
How does the ORTS decanter work?
The decanting stage allows residual collected water to separate from recovered oil. That water can then be returned to the pit, tank, sump or pond so the storage portion of the system contains a higher concentration of recovered oil.
Does ORTS include an oil storage tank?
Yes. Oil storage is a core part of the ORTS concept. Tank size and construction are selected around the application and required storage volume.
What materials can the ORTS tank be made from?
Manufacturer options include carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium and plastic. Material selection depends on the oil, process liquid, temperature and site environment.
What types of transfer pumps can be used?
Oil Skimmers lists centrifugal, double-diaphragm, gear and progressive-cavity pumps as possible ORTS transfer-pump technologies. The correct type and size depend on the actual oil and transfer duty.
Can ORTS be used with changing water levels?
Yes. The free-floating collector tube follows changes in the liquid surface rather than requiring one fixed operating level. The complete tube length and mounting arrangement must still be selected for the actual operating range.
Can the collector tube operate around floating debris?
The flexible free-floating collector tube is designed to move over and around floating debris. Applications containing unusual or excessive solids should still be reviewed individually.
What is an Extended Reach ORTS?
An Extended Reach ORTS places the skimmer away from the main tank using a cantilever or balanced-boom arrangement. Current manufacturer configurations include 6 or 8 ft (1.83 or 2.44 m) cantilevers and 12, 18 or 24 ft (3.66, 5.49 or 7.32 m) balanced booms.
Can an ORTS system be mobile?
Yes. Selected ORTS systems can be configured to move by forklift or pallet jack, while other systems can be installed on a trailer for transport between oil-recovery locations.
Can ORTS operate in cold weather?
Yes. Winterisation options can include skimmer heat, tank heat tracing, insulation and electric or steam heating. The required configuration depends on climate and the oil's temperature-dependent flow behaviour.
Can ORTS be used in hazardous areas in Europe?
Potential hazardous-area applications must be reviewed individually. A manufacturer's US explosion-proof option should not automatically be treated as European ATEX certification. Pumps, motors, controls and the complete installation must match the actual European hazardous-area classification and applicable requirements.
What is the difference between ORTS and a standalone oil skimmer?
A standalone skimmer primarily removes floating oil from the water surface. ORTS continues the process by integrating recovered-oil decanting, local storage, transfer pumping and system controls into one package.
What is the difference between ORTS and an oil-water separator?
ORTS is primarily an active surface-oil recovery, storage and transfer system. An oil-water separator is intended to receive and separate an oily-water stream as part of a dedicated treatment process. The correct technology depends on how the oil enters and behaves in the water.
Can the oil be tested before an ORTS is selected?
For suitable applications, a Tube Test Kit can be used to evaluate collector-tube pickup with the actual oil and process liquid before the final ORTS configuration is selected.
What information is needed to size an ORTS?
Useful information includes oil type, liquid temperature, pit or tank dimensions, liquid-level variation, mounting height, approximate oil quantity, required storage volume, transfer distance, elevation, debris conditions, electrical supply and any hazardous-area classification.
