Guided floating oil recovery inside enclosed storage tanks
The Oil Skimmers Model 3F360-GCS™ is designed for continuous surface-oil removal inside enclosed and aboveground storage tanks where liquid levels can change significantly during operation.
It combines the adjustable 360° floating-weir technology of the Model 3F360 with a guided control arrangement that keeps the skimmer aligned along a defined vertical path as the liquid level rises and falls.
The system is specifically intended to avoid the need for complex rigid vertical riser-pipe arrangements inside large industrial tanks.
Why conventional floating skimmers can be difficult inside large tanks
Storage tanks combine changing liquid levels with limited internal access and restrictions around roof or wall penetrations. The skimmer needs to remain at the oil-water interface without moving uncontrollably through the tank.
How the Model 3F360-GCS works
The floating weir stays at the liquid surface while the Guidance Control System keeps the skimmer positioned on a controlled vertical travel path.
Float at the surface
The Model 3F360 floating head rests at the oil-water interface and follows changes in tank liquid level.
Maintain alignment
Two braided stainless-steel guide cables maintain the skimmer on a defined vertical path inside the tank.
Recover from 360°
The adjustable central weir accepts the upper oily-water layer from all directions around the floating skimmer.
Follow with flexible hose
Recovered liquid exits through a flexible discharge hose that moves with the skimmer as tank level changes.
Key components of the GCS configuration
The GCS adapts the standard floating-weir platform specifically for controlled operation inside storage tanks.
Why guide the floating skimmer instead of using rigid riser piping?
Typical 3F360-GCS applications
The GCS configuration is specifically intended for large industrial tank environments where floating-oil recovery must continue across changing liquid levels.
When to consider the Model 3F360-GCS
Strong GCS applications
- Enclosed or aboveground storage tank
- Significant liquid-level variation
- Need for continuous surface-oil recovery
- Limited internal access
- Skimmer must remain within a defined tank area
- Rigid vertical riser piping is undesirable
- 360° floating-weir recovery is appropriate
Review another solution when
- The application is an open pit, pond or lagoon without a guidance requirement
- A standard manually adjustable 3F360 can float freely
- Self-adjusting 3FFC flow control is the main requirement
- Selective low-water tube skimming is more appropriate
- The contaminant is stably emulsified rather than floating freely
Which floating weir configuration?
Free-floating adjustable weir
For tanks, pits, ponds and other applications where the floating head can operate freely without a guidance system.
Self-adjusting Flow Control
For high-volume and changing-flow applications where automatic weir response and pump-pressure control are useful.
Guided storage-tank skimming
For enclosed and aboveground tanks requiring controlled vertical movement as tank levels rise and fall.
Engineer the GCS around the storage tank
A 3F360-GCS installation depends heavily on the actual tank dimensions, vertical operating range and available roof and floor attachment locations.
Useful application information includes:
- Tank diameter or length and width
- Overall tank height
- Minimum and maximum liquid levels
- Available roof penetrations or access openings
- Possible roof and floor guide-cable attachment points
- Oil or floating contaminant type
- Approximate surface oil quantity
- Liquid temperature
- Required hose length and discharge location
- Required transfer distance
- Available electrical supply if a pump package is required
- Hazardous-area or ATEX classification where applicable
Request a storage-tank application review
Filtra International can review the tank geometry and operating conditions to determine whether the 3F360-GCS is suitable and define the skimmer, guidance, hose and pump configuration.
Tank drawings, photographs and information about the minimum and maximum working liquid levels are particularly useful.
