Product description

The Oil Skimmers Model 1H Brill® tube oil skimmer is a compact industrial oil removal system designed to remove floating oils, fats and grease from the surface of water or process liquids. Using a free-floating collector tube, the skimmer continuously removes tramp oil from tanks, coolant sumps and wash systems. The Model 1H is the most compact Brill® tube skimmer and is specifically designed for installations where space is limited or where tanks have restricted access openings.

Technical overview

Brill® tube oil skimmers operate using a closed loop collector tube that moves continuously across the surface of the liquid. Oil naturally adheres to the tube surface and is transported into the skimmer housing where scraper blades remove the oil and direct it into a collection container. Because the tube floats freely on the liquid surface, it automatically follows fluctuating liquid levels and can move around floating debris while continuing to collect oil.

The Model 1H tube oil skimmer is designed for smaller tanks and coolant sumps and typically removes approximately 1–2 gallons of oil per hour depending on operating conditions, oil viscosity and oil layer thickness.

Oil removal capacity

The oil removal capacity of a tube oil skimmer depends on several operating factors including oil viscosity, oil layer thickness, temperature and system configuration.

The Model 1H Brill® tube oil skimmer is designed for compact installations and typically removes approximately:

  • 1–2 gallons of oil per hour
  • approximately 4–8 litres per hour

Actual oil recovery may vary depending on operating conditions, oil type and the size of the collector tube installed.

Operating principle

The collector tube floats freely on the liquid surface and is slowly driven by the skimmer motor. Oil adheres to the outside of the tube while water is largely rejected. As the tube enters the skimmer housing, stainless steel scraper blades remove the oil from the tube surface and direct it into the discharge outlet. The cleaned tube then returns to the tank surface where the skimming cycle continues.

Material options

Typical construction materials include:
  • Stainless steel frame and collection pan
  • Stainless steel scraper blades
  • Stainless steel drive wheel
  • Ceramic drive wheel fingers
  • Ceramic pressure blocks
  • Ceramic tube guides
The collector tube is available in different materials depending on operating temperature.

Available micron ratings

Oil skimmers do not operate based on filtration micron ratings. Instead, separation occurs because oil adheres naturally to the surface of the collector tube while water is rejected. This allows selective removal of floating oils, fats and grease from the liquid surface.

Design and construction

Typical system characteristics include:
  • Free-floating collector tube design
  • Compact stainless steel skimmer housing
  • Continuous oil removal operation
  • Adjustable installation height
  • Side or top mounting options
  • Low maintenance mechanical design
The Model 1H is lightweight and compact, allowing installation in small tanks or restricted access areas.

Typical applications

Tube oil skimmers are commonly used in:
  • Machining coolant sumps
  • Parts washers
  • Industrial wash tanks
  • Metalworking fluid systems
  • Wastewater pretreatment systems
  • Food processing wash systems
Continuous oil removal helps extend the life of coolants and washing solutions while improving process cleanliness.

Key benefits

  • Compact tube oil skimmer design
  • Continuous tramp oil removal
  • Works with fluctuating liquid levels
  • Unaffected by floating debris
  • Minimal maintenance requirements
  • Extends coolant and wash solution life
  • Typical oil removal capacity of 1–2 gallons per hour

Configuration and quotation

Correct tube skimmer selection depends on the installation conditions of the tank or sump. When requesting a quotation it is important to provide the following information:
  • Height of the skimmer above the liquid surface
  • Width of the tank or basin
  • Length of the tank or basin
  • Operating liquid temperature
  • Power supply voltage
This information allows selection of the correct collector tube length and the correct tube material. Higher operating temperatures may require the use of a high-temperature collector tube.

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
