Product description

Nitrate reduction cartridge for private and groundwater treatment

The Nitrate Reduction Filter Cartridge is designed to reduce elevated nitrate levels in drinking water and private water supplies. Nitrate contamination is commonly caused by agricultural runoff and fertiliser use, and can affect both groundwater and surface water sources.

These cartridges reduce nitrate concentration through ion exchange, helping to bring nitrate levels within acceptable limits for domestic and technical water use.

Filtration principle

The nitrate reduction cartridge operates using a strong base anion exchange resin in chloride form. As water flows through the cartridge, nitrate ions are exchanged for chloride ions and retained within the resin bed.

This process provides:

  • effective reduction of dissolved nitrates

  • stable and predictable nitrate removal

  • consistent water quality improvement

  • reliable performance even in water with elevated sulphate levels

The cartridge works continuously until the exchange capacity of the resin is exhausted.

Filter media

The cartridge is filled with a strong base anion macroporous resin in chloride form.

Key characteristics of the media include:

  • high selectivity for nitrate ions

  • stable performance in varying water chemistries

  • suitability for potable and technical water applications

  • proven effectiveness in private water supplies

The media is suitable for continuous operation within defined limits.

Performance characteristics

Typical performance characteristics include:

  • nitrate reduction efficiency of over 95 percent under suitable conditions

  • capability to reduce nitrate concentrations to significantly lower levels

  • predictable cartridge capacity based on inlet nitrate concentration

Actual treated water volume depends on feed water nitrate levels and cartridge size.

Operating conditions

Typical operating parameters include:

  • operating temperature range from 4 to 45 °C

  • maximum operating pressure of 5.5 bar

  • maximum pressure differential of 1.0 bar

  • suitability for cold water applications

The cartridge is designed for water with dissolved nitrate contamination.

Cartridge configurations

Nitrate reduction cartridges are available in the following configurations:

  • cartridge lengths: 10 inch and 20 inch

  • diameter options: standard diameter and large diameter (Big Blue)

The large diameter versions provide increased resin volume and extended service life.

Typical applications

Nitrate reduction cartridges are commonly used in:

  • private and borehole water supplies

  • groundwater treatment systems

  • agricultural and rural water installations

  • drinking water pre treatment

  • aquatics and technical water systems

They are particularly effective where nitrate contamination exceeds recommended levels.

Key benefits

  • Effective reduction of nitrate levels

  • Proven ion exchange technology

  • Reliable performance over cartridge life

  • Suitable for private water supplies

  • Simple cartridge replacement

  • Available in standard and large diameter formats

Installation considerations

For best performance, nitrate reduction cartridges should be installed:

  • after sediment pre filtration

  • before carbon or polishing filtration

  • in a housing compatible with the selected cartridge diameter

Flow rates should be controlled to ensure sufficient contact time with the resin.

Configuration and quotation

Nitrate reduction filter cartridges are supplied based on cartridge size and application requirements. Selection depends on:

  • nitrate concentration in feed water

  • desired treated water volume

  • flow rate and housing size

Filtra International provides technical support to ensure correct cartridge selection and system performance.

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
