Product description

Food grade carbon block filter cartridge for potable water and food & beverage applications

The food grade carbon block filter cartridge is designed for the treatment of potable water and process water in food and beverage applications. Manufactured using high purity coconut based activated carbon, this cartridge provides reliable reduction of chlorine, taste and odour while meeting stringent food contact requirements.

The cartridge combines carbon block filtration with an integrated melt blown fibre pre-filter layer, delivering high contaminant removal efficiency, long service life and stable filtration performance in hygienic environments.

Filtration principle

The cartridge utilises a high purity coconut based carbon block media combined with a double layer melt blown fibre pre-filtration stage. Water flows through the outer pre-filter layer to remove particulate matter before passing through the carbon block, where chlorine and organic contaminants are adsorbed.

This filtration principle provides:

  • effective chlorine reduction

  • reliable taste and odour removal

  • protection of the carbon block from premature fouling

  • extended service life

  • consistent effluent water quality

The integrated pre-filtration improves overall cartridge performance and capacity.

Media technology and uniqueness

The food grade carbon block media is manufactured from high purity coconut based activated carbon, selected for its adsorption efficiency and suitability for potable water treatment. The addition of a melt blown fibre pre-filter layer creates an economically efficient, high capacity carbon cartridge.

Key media features include:

  • high purity coconut based carbon block

  • integrated melt blown fibre pre-filtration layer

  • chlorine capacity of up to 1 million litres per cartridge

  • food grade materials compliant with US FDA Title 21

This makes the cartridge ideal for food and beverage process applications.

Design and construction

The cartridge is available in a one-piece construction for 10" and 20" lengths and is supplied as standard with a double open end configuration. Multiple diameters are available to suit standard and large diameter housings.

Typical design features include:

  • one-piece carbon block construction

  • double open end design as standard

  • available in standard and Big Blue sizes

  • robust structure for continuous operation

Materials of construction

Standard construction materials include:

  • Filter media: Carbon block (coconut based activated carbon)

  • End caps: Polypropylene

  • Gasket: EPDM (silicone available on request)

  • Netting material: Polyethylene

All materials are selected for food grade suitability and process reliability.

Available dimensions

Typical cartridge dimensions include:

  • Outer diameter: 65 mm, 70 mm, 115 mm (Big Blue)

  • Inner diameter: 28 mm, 30 mm (Big Blue)

  • Lengths: 9.75", 9.87", 10", 20"

This range ensures compatibility with common potable water and process housings.

Operating conditions

Typical operating conditions include:

  • Maximum operating temperature: 52 °C

  • Maximum differential pressure: 7.2 bar at 20 °C

  • Recommended change-out differential pressure: 2.5 bar

Operating limits depend on system configuration and water quality.

Compliance and quality

The food grade carbon block filter cartridge is manufactured using materials compliant with US FDA Title 21 food contact requirements. This ensures suitability for use in potable water systems and food and beverage processing applications.

Key benefits

  • Food grade carbon block cartridge

  • High purity coconut based activated carbon

  • Effective chlorine, taste and odour reduction

  • Integrated pre-filtration layer for extended service life

  • Up to 1 million litres chlorine capacity per cartridge

  • Suitable for potable water and food & beverage processes

Typical applications

Food grade carbon block filter cartridges are commonly used in:

  • potable water treatment

  • food and beverage production

  • breweries and beverage systems

  • process water for food processing

  • point of use and point of entry filtration

Configuration and quotation

Food grade carbon block filter cartridges are available in multiple configurations. Selection parameters include:

  • cartridge length

  • cartridge diameter (standard or Big Blue)

  • gasket material

This ensures the cartridge is correctly matched to hygienic process requirements.

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
