Filter Integrity testers

Filter integrity testing equipment
For membrane filtration validation

Test methods:
Bubble point | Diffusion | Pressure hold | WIT

Filter integrity testing equipment is used to verify the performance of membrane filters in critical filtration processes. These instruments measure parameters such as bubble point pressure, diffusion flow or water intrusion to confirm that the filter structure remains intact.

Typical equipment includes portable integrity testers, bubble point testers, heated filter housings and supporting test accessories. These systems are used in pharmaceutical production, biotechnology processes and other industrial filtration environments where filter validation is required.

Filter integrity testing – technical overview

Filter integrity testing is used to verify that a membrane filter maintains its expected filtration performance. Integrity tests measure the physical behaviour of gas or liquid passing through a filter element in order to confirm that the membrane structure is intact and free from defects.

These tests are commonly performed before and after filtration processes in industries where filtration performance must be verified, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology processing and high-purity industrial filtration systems.

Integrity testing methods

Several standardized methods are used to evaluate membrane filter integrity. Each method measures a different parameter related to the membrane structure.

  • Bubble point testing – Determines the pressure at which gas passes through the largest pores of a wetted membrane.
  • Diffusion testing (forward flow) – Measures gas diffusion through a wetted membrane filter.
  • Pressure hold testing – Evaluates pressure stability across a filter system.
  • Water intrusion testing (WIT) – Used primarily for hydrophobic membranes such as PTFE filters.

Typical testing equipment

  • Portable filter integrity testers
  • Mobile or multi-channel testing systems
  • ATEX integrity testers for hazardous environments
  • Bubble point testing instruments
  • Heated filter housings for WIT testing
  • Filter drying systems and pipe heaters
  • Adapters and tubing sets for test connections

Typical applications

  • Pharmaceutical sterile filtration validation
  • Biotechnology manufacturing processes
  • Membrane filter manufacturing quality control
  • Laboratory filtration testing
  • High-purity gas filtration systems
  • Chemical and industrial filtration processes

Selection parameters

  • Integrity testing method required

Common integrity testing terms

  • Bubble point – pressure at which gas passes through the largest membrane pores.
  • Diffusion test – measurement of gas flow through a wetted membrane.
  • Water intrusion test – integrity test used for hydrophobic filters.
  • Membrane filter – filtration media used for sterile filtration.
