Pleated filter cartridges – technical overview

Pleated filter cartridges are designed to provide highly efficient particle retention combined with a large effective filtration area. By pleating the filter media, these cartridges achieve high flow capacity and low pressure drop while maintaining stable and reproducible filtration performance.

Filtration principle

Pleated filter cartridges operate primarily by surface and near-surface filtration. Contaminants are retained on the surface of the pleated media, allowing predictable and controlled retention behaviour. Compared to depth filtration, pleated designs are typically selected where defined retention efficiency and consistent performance are required.

Filter media

  • Polypropylene (PP) – chemically resistant pleated media suitable for a wide range of industrial and water filtration applications
  • Glass fibre (GF) – high-performance pleated media offering excellent retention efficiency and stable filtration characteristics
  • Pleated metallic media – manufactured from sintered metal mesh or metal fibre, selected for applications requiring high temperature resistance, mechanical strength or cleanable filtration solutions

Retention performance

Polypropylene and glass fibre pleated filter cartridges are supplied as absolute rated filters, with a typical retention efficiency of 99.98% (Beta 5000) at the specified micron rating. Pleated metallic filter cartridges provide defined retention performance depending on media construction and are commonly selected where durability and reusability are required.

Construction options

  • Different core materials and structural designs
  • Multiple end cap configurations
  • Various sealing options to match housing and system requirements

Typical applications

  • Pre-filtration and final filtration of process liquids
  • Water treatment and industrial water systems
  • Chemical and specialty fluid filtration
  • Protection of downstream membranes and sensitive equipment

Key selection criteria

  • Required micron rating and absolute retention performance
  • Filter media type (polypropylene, glass fibre or metallic)
  • Operating flow rate and allowable pressure drop
  • Chemical, thermal and mechanical operating conditions
  • Cartridge dimensions, core design, end caps and sealing method

Pleated filter cartridges are typically selected when predictable and reproducible particle retention is required, offering defined filtration performance with controlled pressure drop in a compact cartridge format.

Pleated filter cartridges may be applied alongside high flow filter cartridges or selected as an alternative to metallic filter cartridges in applications where defined retention and operational reliability are required.
