Monofilament filter bags – technical overview

Monofilament filter bags are selected for surface filtration where a defined and reproducible opening is required. The woven mesh structure retains contaminants primarily on the surface, which supports predictable separation, easy inspection and, in many applications, cleaning and reuse under controlled procedures.

Filtration principle

Monofilament bags provide surface filtration: particles are captured on the surface of the mesh rather than throughout the media depth. Compared to felt (depth filtration), monofilament bags typically offer a clearer cut-off behaviour and improved inspectability, but generally lower dirt holding capacity for the same size. They are often used as a protective or pre-filtration stage to control larger particles before finer filtration steps.

Common monofilament materials

  • Nylon monofilament – commonly used for general industrial filtration, offering a flexible mesh structure and good mechanical performance in many applications
  • Polyester monofilament – widely used for aqueous and process fluids, with good dimensional stability and broad applicability across industrial processes

Mesh opening and separation behaviour

  • Defined openings – monofilament meshes provide an exact opening size for predictable surface retention and easier troubleshooting
  • Inspectable filtration – retained contaminants remain visible on the surface, supporting inspection and process feedback
  • Cleaning potential – in many cases, bags can be cleaned depending on the fluid, contaminant type and integrity requirements

Bag formats and dimensions

Monofilament filter bags are supplied in common industrial bag sizes (e.g. Size 1 and Size 2) with different sealing options. Correct fit between bag and housing is essential to minimise bypass and maintain defined separation performance.

Typical applications

  • Coarse to medium pre-filtration stages for process liquids
  • Protection of downstream cartridge filters, membranes, pumps and nozzles
  • Removal of visible particles and gels from industrial fluids
  • Applications requiring easy inspection or potential cleaning/reuse

Key selection criteria

  • Required mesh opening and separation target
  • Contaminant type, concentration and expected service interval
  • Media compatibility with the process fluid (chemistry and temperature)
  • Bag size, sealing type and housing configuration (bypass control)
  • Cleaning method (if reuse is intended) and integrity requirements

Monofilament filter bags are sometimes also referred to as mesh filter bags or screen filter bags, depending on the industry and application context.

Monofilament filter bags are often used upstream of felt filter bags or extended life filter bags when the objective is to reduce larger particles before depth filtration or longer run-time solutions.
