Metallic filter cartridges – technical overview
Metallic filter cartridges are designed for demanding filtration applications where polymer-based filters are not suitable. Their all-metal construction provides high mechanical strength, thermal stability and chemical resistance, making them suitable for harsh industrial and process conditions.
Filtration concept
Metallic cartridges use porous metal media to achieve stable and reproducible retention performance. Depending on the media construction, filtration can be based on surface filtration, depth-like structures or a combination of both. Many metallic cartridges are cleanable and reusable, allowing extended service life and reduced operating costs.
Metallic media constructions
- Sintered powder metal – rigid porous structures offering defined retention, high mechanical strength and resistance to pressure and temperature
- Sintered metal mesh – multilayer wire mesh constructions providing uniform pore structure, excellent flow characteristics and cleanable filtration
- Sintered metal fibre – high-porosity media suitable for fine filtration, gas applications and hot process streams
Pleated metallic filter cartridges
In addition to cylindrical designs, metallic filter cartridges are also available as pleated metallic filter elements. By pleating sintered metal mesh or metal fibre media, these cartridges combine increased surface area with robust all-metal construction. Pleated metallic cartridges offer excellent flow characteristics while maintaining fine and stable filtration performance.
Retention performance
Metallic filter cartridges are available with a wide range of retention ratings, typically from fine micron levels up to coarse filtration grades. Absolute retention ratings can be achieved depending on media type and construction. Performance remains stable under repeated cleaning cycles.
Typical applications
- High-temperature and high-pressure process filtration
- Filtration of aggressive chemicals and solvents
- Gas filtration and gas diffusion applications
- Cleanable filtration for continuous or batch processes
- Protection of downstream equipment in demanding industrial environments
Key selection criteria
- Required micron rating and retention stability
- Operating temperature, pressure and differential pressure limits
- Material selection and corrosion resistance (e.g. stainless steel, nickel alloys)
- Cleaning method and reusability requirements
- Cartridge dimensions, end fittings and housing compatibility
Metallic filter cartridges, including pleated metallic designs, are selected when durability, cleanability and stable filtration performance are essential for long-term operation.
Metallic filter cartridges may be selected as an alternative to pleated filter cartridges or used in high flow filter cartridge systems where durability and cleanability are required.
