High flow filter cartridges – technical overview
High flow filter cartridges are designed for applications where large volumes of liquid must be filtered efficiently, often under elevated particulate loading. By using large-diameter cartridges with optimised filtration structures, high flow systems reduce the number of filter elements, simplify housing design and extend service intervals.
Filtration concept
High flow cartridges achieve their performance through a combination of increased surface area and defined filtration media. Depending on the construction, they are selected either for high throughput, high dirt-holding capacity, or operation under demanding mechanical and thermal conditions.
High flow cartridge families
- Standard high flow pleated cartridges – pleated cartridges manufactured from polypropylene (PP) or glass fibre (GF) media, available with various core designs and end cap configurations. These cartridges are supplied in lengths of 20", 40", 60" and 80" and are selected for efficient high flow filtration with defined retention performance.
- High flow pleated cartridges – 740-series – pleated polymeric cartridges designed specifically for high dirt load applications. The 740-series is supplied in a 40" length only and combines high dirt-holding capacity with stable retention behaviour.
- High flow metallic cartridges – manufactured from metallic filtration media, typically stainless steel, and supplied in lengths of 20", 40" and 60". These cartridges are selected for applications requiring high mechanical strength, elevated temperature resistance or cleanable and reusable filtration solutions.
Retention performance
Retention characteristics depend on the selected cartridge family and media type. Pleated polymeric and glass fibre high flow cartridges provide defined particle retention at the specified micron rating, while metallic high flow cartridges offer stable retention performance based on media construction and are typically applied where durability and reusability are key requirements.
Typical applications
- Pre-filtration for reverse osmosis (RO) systems
- Water treatment and utility water filtration
- Cooling water and process water systems
- Industrial process filtration with high flow or high dirt load
Key selection criteria
- Required system flow rate and service interval
- Expected dirt load and contamination profile
- Cartridge family (standard pleated, 740-series or metallic)
- Required micron rating and retention performance
- Operating pressure, temperature and chemical exposure
- Cartridge length, core design, end caps and housing compatibility
High flow filter cartridges are typically selected to replace multiple standard cartridges with a smaller number of high-capacity elements, improving operational efficiency while maintaining predictable filtration performance.
High flow filter cartridges are commonly installed as part of water treatment filter cartridges systems or as pre-filtration for reverse osmosis cartridges.
