Product description

Seawater reverse osmosis membrane for desalination and high salinity water treatment

The Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Membrane is engineered for desalination and treatment of high salinity water sources where high salt rejection and robust performance are essential. These membranes are built for seawater desalination systems, offshore and coastal installations, and industrial applications where feed water salinity is significantly higher than typical brackish sources.

Designed for operation under high operating pressures and continuous service, seawater RO membranes deliver stable permeate quality and efficient salt removal.

Filtration principle

Seawater reverse osmosis membranes operate with a semi-permeable thin film composite structure. When high pressure is applied to the seawater feed, water molecules are forced through the membrane while dissolved salts, minerals and a broad range of contaminants are rejected.

This process delivers:

  • high salt and dissolved solids rejection

  • consistent production of low-salinity permeate

  • effective performance even at high feed salinity

  • stable long-term operation

Reverse osmosis is a core desalination technology used when salt content exceeds typical brackish levels.

Membrane construction

SWRO membranes supplied by Filtra International are manufactured using advanced thin film composite membrane technology. Typical element construction includes:

  • selective polyamide thin film composite layer

  • internal support layers for mechanical strength

  • feed spacer optimized for flow distribution

  • permeate collection material with low pressure loss

  • robust outer wrap for element protection

This construction ensures consistent performance in demanding seawater applications.

Performance characteristics

Seawater RO membranes are built to combine high rejection with seawater-specific operating conditions.

Key performance characteristics include:

  • high salt rejection, typically 99% or greater for seawater desalination

  • stable permeate quality over extended operating periods

  • reliable flux behaviour under high pressure

  • capability to operate at high feed salinities and temperatures consistent with seawater conditions

These characteristics make seawater RO membranes suitable for first-pass desalination and other high-salinity water treatment applications.

Operating conditions

Seawater RO membranes are designed for high pressure and specific feed conditions, including:

  • operation in seawater and high salinity brackish water feeds

  • high applied pressure typical for seawater RO desalination

  • controlled pH operating range suited to seawater pretreatment and cleaning

  • compatibility with standard RO cleaning protocols

Typical seawater RO performance is based on standard test conditions of elevated pressure and controlled recovery rates relevant to desalination systems.

Standard dimensions

Seawater RO membranes are manufactured to industry standard dimensions for pressure vessel compatibility.

Typical dimensions include:

  • nominal diameter: 4 inch and 8 inch

  • nominal length: 40 inch

These standard sizes are compatible with common multi-element pressure vessels used in seawater desalination and industrial reverse osmosis systems.

Typical applications

SWRO membranes are commonly used in:

  • seawater desalination plants

  • coastal and island water systems

  • marine and offshore watermakers

  • industrial water reuse with high salinity feeds

  • high salinity cooling and process water treatment

  • emergency and mobile desalination systems

Key benefits

  • High rejection capability for seawater salinity

  • Stable permeate quality over time

  • Compatible with standard seawater RO pressure vessels

  • Designed for high pressure operation

  • Suitable for continuous, industrial duty

  • Supports efficient desalination system performance

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
