Product description

The Oil Skimmers 3F Flow Control floating weir oil skimmer is designed for removal of floating oil, grease and other surface contaminants from water in applications requiring rapid deployment and high-volume oil recovery. The unit is well suited for industrial tanks, wastewater systems, spill response and temporary oil recovery duties where flow conditions may change and a self-adjusting intake is beneficial.

Technical overview

The 3F Flow Control floating weir skimmer uses a floating intake design that automatically adjusts based on flow rate. The flow is controlled by pump pressure, allowing the skimmer to respond to changing recovery conditions without manual adjustment of the weir position during operation. This makes the unit suitable for applications where oil thickness, flow demand or pumping conditions vary over time.

Oil removal capacity

Floating weir skimmer performance depends on pump selection, oil viscosity, oil layer thickness, hose size and transfer distance.

The 3F Flow Control floating weir skimmer is designed for high-volume oil removal jobs and for applications where rapid deployment or temporary increases in skimming capacity are required.

Actual recovery rate depends on the complete skimming system configuration and downstream transfer equipment.

Operating principle

The skimmer floats on the liquid surface and withdraws the upper contaminated layer through the intake opening. The weir position self-adjusts according to the flow induced by the connected pump. By changing pump pressure, the operator can control the skimming rate and optimize recovery according to oil thickness and process conditions. This allows the skimmer to adapt to changing site conditions during operation.

Material options

Typical construction materials include:
  • Industrial float body and intake assembly
  • Chemically resistant wetted components
  • Flexible hose connection for oil transfer systems
  • Materials selected according to fluid compatibility and process environment
Material selection depends on fluid chemistry, temperature and application conditions.

Available micron ratings

Floating weir oil skimmers do not operate using filtration micron ratings. Instead, separation is based on controlled withdrawal of the floating surface layer. The skimmer removes oil and surface contaminants prior to downstream oil-water separation or treatment.

Design and construction

Typical design characteristics include:
  • Floating weir skimmer design
  • Self-adjusting intake based on flow rate
  • Pump pressure controlled operation
  • Portable and easy one-person deployment
  • Suitable for temporary or permanent installation
  • Compatible with transfer and recovery systems
The 3F Flow Control is particularly suited to high-volume oil removal jobs or sudden increases in oil recovery demand.

Typical applications

Floating weir skimmers are commonly used in:
  • Sumps and pits
  • Industrial tanks
  • Parts washers
  • Equalization tanks
  • Settling ponds
  • Leachate ponds
  • Lagoons
  • Open water oil recovery
  • Rapid spill response

Key benefits

  • Self-adjusting weir based on flow rate
  • Suitable for high-volume oil recovery jobs
  • Rapid deployment by one operator
  • Useful for spill response and temporary capacity increases
  • Follows fluctuating liquid levels
  • Flexible control through pump pressure adjustment

Configuration and quotation

To specify the correct floating weir skimmer system, the following parameters should be defined:
  • Type of oil or floating contaminant
  • Oil layer thickness
  • Required recovery rate
  • Tank, pit, pond or lagoon dimensions
  • Pump type and operating pressure
  • Transfer distance
  • Hose size and hose length
  • Fluid temperature and chemical compatibility
These parameters determine the correct skimmer configuration, pump arrangement and transfer system.

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
