Product description

Colour-change deionising resin cartridge for ultra-pure water control

The Deionising Colour-Change Resin Filter Cartridge is designed to polish pre-treated water to high purity levels while providing a clear visual indication of resin exhaustion. As the resin capacity is consumed, the colour of the media changes, allowing easy monitoring of cartridge life without the need for conductivity meters.

These cartridges are commonly used as a standalone solution for small batch production of pure water or as a final polishing and performance indicator stage after larger deionisation or reverse osmosis systems.

Filtration principle

The colour-change deionising cartridge operates using mixed bed ion exchange technology. Dissolved cations are exchanged for hydrogen ions and dissolved anions are exchanged for hydroxide ions. These combine to form pure water.

A colour-change indicator integrated into the resin provides a visual signal as the ion exchange capacity becomes exhausted.

This process delivers:

  • effective removal of dissolved ions

  • consistent polishing of pre-treated water

  • visual indication of resin exhaustion

  • simplified maintenance and replacement planning

Filter media

The cartridge contains a mixed bed, colour-change ion exchange resin consisting of:

  • 60 percent strong acid cation resin in hydrogen form

  • 40 percent strong base anion resin in hydroxide form

The resin transitions from blue to brown as exhaustion occurs, providing a clear visual indication of remaining capacity.

Performance characteristics

Typical performance characteristics include:

  • production of water with conductivity around 0.1 µS/cm under suitable conditions

  • stable polishing performance when used after reverse osmosis

  • visible indication of resin exhaustion for reliable cartridge replacement

Actual treated water volume depends on inlet water quality and cartridge size.

Operating conditions

Typical operating parameters include:

  • operating temperature range from 4 to 45 °C

  • maximum operating pressure of 5.5 bar

  • maximum pressure differential of 1.0 bar at 21 °C

  • suitable for cold water applications

The cartridge is intended for use with low TDS feed water.

Cartridge configurations

Deionising colour-change resin cartridges are available in the following configurations:

  • cartridge lengths: 5 inch, 10 inch and 20 inch

  • diameter options: standard diameter and large diameter (Big Blue)

Large diameter versions provide increased resin volume and extended service life.

Typical applications

Deionising colour-change resin cartridges are commonly used in:

  • laboratory water systems

  • pharmaceutical water preparation

  • dental water treatment

  • autoclave feed water

  • post reverse osmosis polishing

  • small batch ultra-pure water production

They are particularly useful where simple visual monitoring is preferred.

Key benefits

  • Visual colour-change indication of resin exhaustion

  • Produces high purity water

  • Ideal as final polishing stage

  • Simplifies maintenance planning

  • Available in multiple cartridge sizes

  • No chemical dosing required

  • Easy cartridge replacement

Installation considerations

For optimal performance, colour-change deionising cartridges should be installed:

  • after sediment, carbon and reverse osmosis treatment

  • in a housing compatible with the selected cartridge diameter

  • at controlled flow rates to ensure sufficient contact time

Proper pretreatment significantly extends resin life.

Configuration and quotation

Deionising colour-change resin cartridges are supplied based on cartridge length and diameter. Selection depends on:

  • inlet water conductivity

  • desired water purity

  • required treated water volume

  • system flow rate

Filtra International provides technical support to ensure correct cartridge selection and system configuration.

Technical support and validation

Selecting the correct filtration solution often requires verification under real process conditions. Filtra International supports this process through several practical testing and validation options.

Filter samples – available for compatibility and performance checks in existing filter housings.
Full-scale filter housing rental – for temporary installations or process evaluation.
Laboratory and pilot-scale filtration units – enabling controlled testing before full implementation.
Application testing by our team – customers may send product samples for filtration trials and performance evaluation.

These options allow process validation before committing to a permanent installation.
