Filter cartridge housings – technical overview

Filter cartridge housings are used to contain one or multiple filter cartridges for controlled liquid and gas filtration. They are commonly applied in industrial process filtration, water treatment and utility systems where predictable filtration performance and reliable sealing are required.

The housing design plays a critical role in overall filtration efficiency. Proper flow distribution across the installed cartridges ensures uniform loading, stable pressure drop behaviour and consistent retention performance throughout the service life of the filters.

Housing principle

Filter cartridge housings distribute incoming flow evenly over the installed cartridges, allowing contaminants to be retained by the filter media while filtered liquid or gas exits the housing. Depending on the application, housings can be configured for depth, pleated, membrane or high flow filter cartridges.

As contaminants accumulate in the cartridges, differential pressure increases gradually. Cartridge replacement is typically based on a defined pressure drop limit or service interval, ensuring controlled and reproducible filtration performance.

Types of filter cartridge housings

  • Single cartridge housings – compact housings designed for low flow or point-of-use filtration applications
  • Multi cartridge housings – housings that accommodate multiple cartridges in parallel to handle higher flow rates efficiently
  • High flow cartridge housings – designed for large-diameter cartridges that allow high throughput with a reduced housing footprint
  • Plastic and PVDF cartridge housings – selected for corrosive or chemically aggressive process fluids
  • Heavy-duty cartridge housings – engineered for demanding industrial or project-based filtration requirements

Typical applications

  • Industrial process and utility water filtration
  • Chemical and petrochemical processing
  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical utilities
  • Compressed air and gas filtration
  • Pre-filtration and polishing filtration stages

Key selection criteria

  • Required flow rate and number of cartridges
  • Cartridge type and retention definition
  • Housing material compatibility with the process fluid
  • Operating pressure, temperature and chemical exposure
  • Sealing method, connections and system integration

Filter cartridge housings are often used downstream of bag filter housings or upstream of critical process steps where reliable and reproducible filtration is required as part of a multi-stage filtration strategy.
