Wines are produced for thousands of years. The oldest archaeological evidence of wine produced from grapes has been found at sites in Georgia (c. 6000 BC)
Filtra International has lots of experience in filtration of wines and filtration of all aspects around wine production. We are aware that micro stability is just as important as the wine's unique flavour and characteristics. Our filters remove all wine spoilage organisms resulting in a optimum shelf life of the wines.
There are multiple filtration stages when it comes
to the production of wine:
The first filtration step is called clarification or trap filtration. The goal of this filtration step is to remove particles and yeast. This step is mostly done after the first aging of the wine. We supply a variety of filters for this filtration step like cartridges, filter sheets, lenticular moduls and filter aids like Diatomaceous earth (D.E.) / Kieselguhr (KG). We can determine which filter step is best for your specific application, please invite us to have a look at your process and discuss all options in more detail.
Sterile filtration is required to make sure the water is free of bacteria.Filtra International supplies a complet range of sterile filter cartridges, RO systems, CIP systems for your specific requirements.
In order to return long service life and efficient use of the final filtration system, the suspended particle and microbial loading of the wine should be reduced with adequate pre-filtration .Final membrane filtration is normally the most expensive filter stage in the line and therefore, should only be used to remove microbes.
This filtration step is sometimes also called "polishing of the wine" because the last particles, haze, yeast and bacteria are removed from the aged wine. Pre-stabilisation of wine van be done with filter sheets and lenticular modules, but most of the time this is done with filter cartridges.Another option is to combine pre-stabilisation and final filtration in an automated filtration skid.
This step is the last filtration step and is done just prior bottling. The main goal is to get rid of bacteria and fermenting yeast such as Brettanomyces bruxellensis. We recommend to use sterile filter cartridges and integrity tested filter cartridges and perform integrity tests after each batch. By doing this, you are ensured the wine is sterile and quality is guaranteed. This can be done by using a filter housing, cartridges and a portable integrity tester. Filtra International offers On-site and Off-site integrity services.Another option is to use a fully automated filtration skid with integrity tester, which performs filtration automatically. Both type of systems will use the same FiltraVino membrane cartridges.
During the final filtration stage in soft drink production it is crucial to remove spoilage organisms such as yeast and bacteria. We recommend to use sterile filter cartridges and integrity tested filter cartridges and perform integrity tests after each batch. The use is compressed gases is common in the wine industry. The filling machine uses Co2, nitrogen or compressed air during operation. These gases can contain contaminations which can spoil the wine.Compressed gases come in contact with quite some critical components and therefore we advice to filter at least the gases in contact with:
Wines also come in contact with holding tanks and storage tanks which require a vent filter in order to prevent microorganisms to enter the tank and spoil the wine. Filtration for both gases and venting applications can be done by polymeric and metallic filters. We will provide you a custom advice, depending on the process parameters and your specific requirements. Please note that all our filters come with foodgrade certificates and batch identification for full traceability.
Lots of water is used in wine making and it is important to have quality and microorganisms free water to prevent the chance of wine spoiling. We recommend to filter the following water systems this can either be done at the main water intake, or at each water using component:
Sterile filtration is required to make sure the water is free of bacteria.Filtra International supplies complete RO systems and CIP systems for your specific requirements.
We offer a full range of porous sinterd metallic filters which are advised to use on steam filtration in order to sterilise the steam before entering the wine making components. The benefits of porous sintered metal filters is that they are corrosion and temperature resistant while providing sterile filtration.
Porous sintered metal are commonly used for carbonisation to make sparkling wine.
